Embedded Hardware Developer

Job Description

Chiptech are seeking an Embedded Hardware Engineer to design and develop innovative hardware systems/products that integrate seamlessly with firmware and external software solutions.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in microcontroller and electronic circuit design, circuit analysis, PCB design and exposure to the full product lifecycle from concept generation through to product release including demonstrable experience of delivering your designs into service.

The candidate should be capable of designing and implementing the appropriate firmware/software that operates within the solution.

The role will involve working alongside software developers for integration/communication into cloud-based systems and product engineer/designer with regards to overall design/aesthetics/enclosure etc.

Responsibilities of the role

The successful candidate will work within the UK technical team based in Lancaster (with part remote working if required)

Hardware Design & Development:

  • Work with the product team in defining design requirements
  • Develop schematics and PCB layouts for embedded systems that meet set requirements
  • Select appropriate components, availability, and ensure design compliance with industry standards.
  • The role will likely include working with our existing Software and R&D teams based in New Zealand and so will require some degree of flexibility with working hours.

Prototyping & Testing:

  • Build and test prototypes to validate design concepts/meets requirements.
  • Perform debugging, troubleshooting, and validation of hardware performance.
  • Firmware development
  • Manage compliance testing with appropriate external resources

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other hardware/firmware engineers and software engineers to integrate design into other solutions/back-ends
  • Collaborate with internal or external manufacturing and quality assurance teams to ensure robust production designs.
  • Support the manufacturing process with assistance on test rigs/production rigs and required test modes

Documentation & Compliance:

  • Prepare detailed documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and validation reports.
  • Prepare detailed build package documentation
  • Ensure designs meet regulatory and safety standards for the region they will be used (UKCA, CE, etc).

Business support:

  • Where appropriate, assisting with technical support to internal stakeholders such as issue tracking/fixing issues/adding new features/obsolescence changes
  • Ensure adherence to all Company Policies and Procedures.
  • Be fully conversant and compliant with all Environmental Health and Safety procedures.

Qualifications/ Experience/Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 2 years Experience in hardware design projects/creating circuit applications/PCBs/Products.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related qualification / or industry experience will also be considered.
  • Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, or similar) to create schematic circuit design and multi-layer PCB layouts.
  • Solid understanding of microcontrollers, digital/analogue circuit design, and signal integrity.
  • Experience with simulation and testing tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analysers, etc.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good experience in PCB firmware development, including the diagnostics/debugging using embedded C or C++ language under the control of an IDE environment and compiler tool set
  • Exposure to developing firmware using a real-time operating system and the design considerations when using an RTOS.
  • Experience in using source code control systems as part of a team, such as Git/GitHub
  • Experience in creating a design build package, creation of required assembly drawings/build of materials, design files and technical files.
  • Is engaged with their own personal development and follows through on agreed actions.

Preferred Skills:

  • Clear communications and interpersonal skills, as needed, as part of a wider development and product support team. Experience of agile frameworks and tools such as JIRA.
  • Low power design for battery-powered devices
  • Circuit simulation/spice tools
  • Regulatory compliance – working with an independent test house to ensure a design meets the essential requirements of relevant compliance directives and standards

Optional Skills:

  • Knowledge of embedded Linux systems and the development of applications running on an embedded Linux system.
  • Knowledge of implementing and supporting wireless communications (ideally WiFi communications, preferably with experience of compliance testing)
  • Knowledge of IP networking/protocols including VoIP (voice over IP) protocol and SIP is an advantage
  • Experience of cybersecurity in embedded systems

Work Environment:

This role typically involves a mix of desk-based design work/prototyping/firmware development and test/debug. There is also occasional travel for compliance testing, visiting manufacturing sites and client location visits may also be required.
